RLS 2013: Stevenson conference in Sydney

RLS 2013 will be held in Sydney, Australia, from 8-10 July 2013, at the University of New South Wales.
The conference organizers are Dr Chris Danta and Associate Professor Roslyn Jolly from the School of the Arts and Media.

The conference theme is ‘Stevenson, Time and History’. Topics for discussion include:

  • History and historiography
  • The historical novel
  • Theories of evolution
  • The idea of progress
  • Generation and degeneration
  • Narrative temporalities
  • Genealogy and ancestry
  • Stages of life: childhood, youth, age
  • Memory and nostalgia
  • Change
  • Ancient and modern

The call for papers will go out on 1 September 2012, with a deadline of 1 December 2012. Please direct any enquiries to Roslyn Jolly at r.jolly@unsw.edu.au

  1. For your background, the Union Club is still going strong as the Union, University and Schools Club, Bent Street Sydney.

    The old 1890s clubhouse that Stevenson stayed in was demolished in 1957 to make way for the Wentworth Sofitel and the current Bent St clubhouse was built on land to the side of the old clubhouse.

    We still have the leather library chair that Stevenson customarily used and a range of interior photographs of the rooms Stevenson would have lived/worked in (taken just prior to the 1957 demolition!). This was of course also whence he wrote the letter dealing with Father Damien (the leper priest in Hawii) who was recently canonized.
